Japan?s Beer-Free Beer Garden

TOKYO ? Suntory Liquors says it will claim a first in local beer-garden history when it opens its stand this week: No alcohol allowed.

The garden at Tokyo?s swanky Midtown shopping complex will not be serving any alcoholic beverages.?The only beer on tap will be the Japanese brewery?s All-Free, of which the alcohol content is 0.000%. There will also be soda, orange juice and tea. That?s it.

Only open in the afternoon, a Suntory spokeswoman said the company hopes to target daytime shoppers and office workers who want a refreshing drink but can?t get boozy because they ?still have things to do.? Japan Real Time has more.

Western firefighters report progress, concerns

Nearly 50 wildfires around the country burn on. Firefighters in Colorado have moved toward containing two of the big ones, but they're preparing for a difficult season.?

Firefighters grappling with the two most destructive wildfires on record in Colorado reported progress on Monday, but were steeling themselves for a long season in what has already been a dangerously active fire year in the western United States.

The fires, which left a haze of smoke over the state's urban corridors, have displaced tens of thousands of people and left vast swathes of forest a blackened wasteland in addition to charring more than 600 homes.

"I don't think we've seen a fire season like this in the history of Colorado," Governor John Hickenlooper said last week after surveying the destruction wrought by the deadly Waldo Canyon Fire west of Colorado Springs.

The wind-driven Waldo, which is blamed for two deaths and the destruction of 346 homes, was now 55 percent contained, incident commander Rich Harvey said on Monday.

"We're getting our licks in," Harvey said of firefighting efforts on the 17,827-acre ( 7,214-hectare) blaze burning mostly in the Pike National Forest.
Meanwhile, the High Park Fire, burning in steep terrain west of Fort Collins, is now 100 percent contained but will likely smolder until autumn snows return to the Rocky Mountains, fire managers said.

The lightning-sparked blaze has blackened 87,284 acres of private land and portions of the Roosevelt National Forest, consumed 259 homes, and is blamed for the death of a 62-year-old grandmother who perished inside her mountain cabin.

Tinder-dry vegetation, a prolonged heat wave and high winds have contributed to the aggressive fires, said Bob Kurilla, spokesman for the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center.

"Hopefully the monsoon rains forecast for the next couple of weeks will help alleviate the situation," he said.

Two Found Dead

President Barack Obama pledged more federal aid for firefighting and relief efforts after touring the Waldo Canyon fire zone on Friday

Nationwide, nearly 50 major wildfires are burning uncontained, mostly in 10 western states -- Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii.

Mike Ferris, spokesman for the National Interagency Fire Center, said at this stage there are adequate resources to combat the wildfires as fire managers move equipment and manpower from areas with little fire activity to states that need them.

"But if we continue to get new (fire) starts, then things can get a little more complex," he said.

Ferris said it was too early to tell what effect the grounding of a C-130 air tanker fleet may have in the wake of the deadly crash of one of the Air Force tankers in South Dakota.

At the Waldo Canyon Fire, fewer than 3,000 residents who were forced to flee their homes remained under evacuation orders, city officials said, adding that crews were slowly restoring utility services to the affected areas.

When 65 mile-an-hour (100 km-per-hour) winds blew flames across several ridgelines and threatened populated neighborhoods last Tuesday, more than 30,000 people were ordered to flee the inferno.

Most of the remaining displaced residents live in the Mountain Shadows subdivision, a tightly clustered neighborhood of upscale homes in the bluffs on?Colorado Spring's western edge where the bulk of property losses occurred.

The remains of two people were found last week in a burned-out house in Mountain Shadows, bringing to six the number of people who have died in Colorado wildfires this year. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Islamist threat to Timbuktu's ancient scientific texts

Timbuktu's priceless collection of ancient scientific texts is at risk of destruction by hard-line Islamists.

Ansar Dine, a Tuareg militia, occupies territory around Timbuktu, a town in northern Mali listed as a world heritage site. In recent weeks, the group has destroyed historic tombs in the town (see picture), which house the remains of Islamic Sufi saints and which Ansar Dine says are idolatrous.

"We know six or seven shrines have been attacked," Lazare Eloundou Assomo, chief of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre's Africa Unit, told New Scientist. "But there are many scientific documents at risk too, and no one can tell if they'll be safe."

UNESCO has accepted a request by the government of Mali to add Timbuktu to the list of heritage sites at risk of destruction.

Various sites in Timbuktu house a matchless collection of 300,000 ancient Islamic texts, some dating from the 13th century, which include treatises on science and mathematics. Among them are texts on the harmful effects of tobacco, on medicine as practised 300 years ago, and on astronomy.

One of UNESCO's projects is to translate and digitise the Timbuktu manuscripts, many of which are currently kept in the town's Ahmed Baba Institute. They are among the most important historical texts in Africa.

Although the Chargers are the only team that could move to L.A. in 2013, the Chargers say that the memo hinting at the possible move of a team to L.A. in 2013 doesn?t move them any closer to, um, moving.

Mark Fabiani, the team?s special counsel on stadium issues, told NBC 7 in San Diego that the memo doesn?t ?move the sticks? any closer to the Chargers getting a new stadium in Los Angeles.

?We saw it simply as a re-affirmation of things that the Commissioner and the league were saying for a long time,?? Fabiani said.

He then summarized the most important points.

?You can?t move to L.A. without a permanent facility,? Fabiani said.? ?[I]f you move, you?d better expect there to be a second team moving there at some point in the near future after you move.? And, the NFL is clearly in charge of the L.A. market ? and anybody that thinks otherwise should read this memo.?

On the first point, Fabiani isn?t entirely accurate.? The memo from Commissioner Roger Goodell to all 32 teams explains that a team can negotiate a deal with an alternative site like the Coliseum or Rose Bowl that would host games until the permanent facility is built.? Thus, the Chargers could move in 2013, play at the Rose Bowl until the permanent venue has been built, and stay put.

?No memo from the NFL can change the basic fact that until there?s a stadium that?s finished and ready to go,? Fabiani said,? ?and until there?s a team that wants to play in it, nothing?s going to happen in L.A.?

Again, that?s not what the memo says.? A team can move to Los Angeles and play elsewhere temporarily.

Fabiani apparently missed that part of the memo.? Or maybe he?s deliberately misrepresenting it so that the Chargers can have some cover as they position themselves to move, especially in light of an upcoming mayoral election in which both candidates have said they oppose the use of public funding for a football stadium.

So while the memo may not move the Chargers any closer to Los Angeles, it definitely doesn?t move them any farther away.
