A Diverse Approach To Networking
For those employed within the Security industry it will come as no surprise that convergence of processes employed across numerous different, yet inter-connected, disciplines is the most effective way to achieve a successful enterprise risk management strategy. The Women?s Security Society (WSS) believes that there is real value in encouraging networking amalgamation within the industry; certainly there are institutions and forums that represent Physical Security, Cyber Security, Information Security, Intelligence, Business Continuity, Crisis Management and Data Privacy (to name a few), but until now, professionals within the industry have found challenges networking within a truly convergent environment.
It was with this in mind, that four individuals identified the need for the creation of a society that would encourage the exchange of information/services and the cultivation of productive relationships for employment and business networking, across these and a number of other identified inter-connected disciplines within the Security industry. These individuals all happened to be women who clearly understood that there has been a plethora of females enter the Industry at all business levels with valuable skills and knowledge across all disciplines, but that the Security profession is still largely construed as a male oriented industry. Action focused and ready for change, these women realised their vision on the 26 February 2013 with the launch of the Women?s Security Society from the City of London.
The WSS is not just another forum. It is representative of the whole of the Security industry and is supported by male and female colleagues alike. Both Frank Gardner OBE, BBC Security correspondent, and Janet Williams, former Deputy Assistant Commissioner Specialist Operations, Metropolitan Police Service, were the keynote speakers for the launch. Frank delivered a motivational and jovial speech, noting how ?delighted and honoured? he was to ?inaugurate the Society? and was impressed with the ?formidable amount of collective knowledge and experience in the room.? Janet presented a personal account of the challenges that she has experienced as a female in the profession; a number of which resonated with the audience. On conclusion of her speech, Janet toasted the inauguration and confirmed her commitment to the WSS going forward, identifying that the ?passion and energy demonstrated by the Board is infectious.?
The energy of the WSS Executive Committee is infectious. It comprises 13 females who are experienced and knowledgeable in their respective fields. Furthermore, they have first-hand knowledge of how the related disciplines inter-connect and this came through in abundance during the evening; invoking numerous interesting and topical conversations. In fact one of the 100 opinion formers attending the launch noted how it was the first networking event that he had been to in recent times whereby he could network effectively and enjoyably!
The WSS is dynamic, vibrant and challenging. It respects and recognises all the other networks across our professions - but the ethos is different. It engenders closer relationships and aims to strengthen future prospects for women working across all security disciplines, it will promote change and challenge the ratio of men to women in security related roles and will base its approach on quantitative and qualitative analysis.????Notably the WSS is free to join and is sponsored by some of the bastions of the security world, who are equally excited about the future of the WSS.
