Researchers from NYU, Harvard, and Dow Chemical create new microparticles that self-assemble like atoms into molecules

Cambridge, Mass. - October 31, 2012 - Scientists have created new kinds of particles, 1/100th the diameter of a human hair, that spontaneously assemble themselves into structures resembling molecules made from atoms. These new particles come together, or "self-assemble," to form structures in patterns that were previously impossible to make and hold promise for manufacturing advanced optical materials and ceramics.

The method, described in the latest issue of the journal Nature, was developed by a team of chemists, chemical engineers, and physicists at New York University (NYU), the Harvard School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, the Harvard Department of Physics, and Dow Chemical Company.

The method is centered on enhancing the architecture of colloidssmall particles suspended within a fluid medium. Colloidal dispersions are composed of such everyday items as paint, milk, gelatin, glass, and porcelain, but their potential to create new materials remains largely untapped.

Previously, scientists had succeeded in building rudimentary structures from colloids. But the ability use colloids to design and assemble complex 3-dimensional structures, which are vital to the design of advanced optical materials, has been limited. This is, in part, because colloids lack directional bonds, which are necessary to control particle self-assembly as well as to enhance complexity while maintaining the structural integrity of these creations. Such assemblies serve as the building blocks of the natural worlde.g., atoms and moleculesbut they are rare in the colloidal domain.

"What this method aimed to do was to use nature's properties for atoms and apply them to the colloidal world," explained NYU chemistry professor Marcus Weck, one of the study's coauthors.

"Chemists have a whole periodic table of atoms to choose from when they synthesize molecules and crystals," added coauthor Vinothan Manoharan, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Physics at Harvard. "We wanted to develop a similar 'construction set' for making larger-scale molecules and crystals."

In developing colloids with such properties, the researchers engineered chemical "patches" that can form directional bonds, thus allowing for the assembly of 3-dimensional "lattices" with only a few connections between particles, an important design element for many advanced materials. Without directional bonding, such structures are unstable.

The trick was establishing bonding capabilities on the patches. The scientists did so by using single strands of DNA, which scientists at NYU and elsewhere have previously employed to organize small particles. In the method described in Nature, these strands of DNA served as "sticky ends" to which particle patches could adhere.

"What this means is we can make particles that attach only at the patches, and then we can program them so only specific kinds of particles attach at those patches," said coauthor and NYU physics professor David Pine. "This gives us tremendous flexibility to design 3-dimensional structures."

The researchers added that the specificity of DNA interactions between patches means that colloids with different properties, such as size, color, chemical functionality, or electrical conductivity, could lead to the production of new materials. These potentially include 3-dimensional electrically wired networks or photonic crystals to enhance the optical displays of a range of consumer products and to improve the speed of computer chips.

Additional coauthors included Yufeng Wang (NYU), Yu Wang (NYU), Dana R. Breed (Dow Chemical Co.), Lang Feng (NYU), and Andrew D. Hollingsworth (NYU).

Key work was performed at NYU's Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, an interdisciplinary laboratory supported by the National Science Foundation.

Poll Shows Voters Placing Energy Policy Over Environment

According to the results of a recent Harris Poll, Americans are placing a higher priority on energy policy than environmental policy in deciding which candidate to vote for. Here are the details.

* Harris Interactive surveyed 2,562 adults online between Sept. 17 and 24, 2012.

* Overall, 77 percent of respondents to the poll rated energy policy as either very important or important when asked which policies contribute most to their support of one candidate over another.

* 67 percent of respondents found environmental policy to be important or very important. Environmental policy was the least influential in Americans' presidential choice, Harris found.

* The gap in importance between energy and environmental policy grows according to age, Harris Interactive reported, with energy policy holding only a 3 percent advantage over environmental policy, 66 to 63 percent, for Americans between the ages of 18-35.

* Among 36-47 year olds, the gap in the importance of energy policy as compared to environmental policy increased to 10 percentage points, 74-64 percent. The gap grew 13 points among 48-66 year olds and 90 percent of those 67 and older found energy policy important in choosing a president, compared to 74 percent who placed importance on a candidate's environmental policy.

* Harris Interactive found that 48 percent of Americans most often identify nuclear power as an energy source that is harmful or very harmful to the environment, with clean coal being considered harmful or very harmful.

* Fewer than a fourth of Americans believe that natural gas is either harmful or very harmful. Another 40 percent rate it as "not that harmful" while nearly 20 percent believe it is not at all harmful to the environment.

* Thirty-one percent of the respondents to the Harris poll stated that the potential benefits of natural gas hydraulic fracturing -- known as "fracking" -- outweigh the risks. Thirty-two percent believe the risks outweigh the benefits. Thirty-eight percent stated that they are unsure and that more education is needed on the fracking process and its implications.

* While both energy and environmental policies were regarded as less influential in deciding on a candidate than the economy, tax, jobs, healthcare and foreign policies, Harris Interactive Vice President and Senior Consultant Sarah Simmons stated that energy remains an important policy to Americans.

* "Even after the election is over," Simmons said, "energy will remain an important subject for Americans because it is also central to so many other policies, especially economic, jobs and environmental policies."

* Energy pricing has a significant impact on families, Simmons added, as it involves the price paid at the pump, the ability of businesses to increase the workforce, its influence on the nation's economic health and way of life.

Four Ways To Hedge Your Stock Bets With Options | Options ...

As you may already be aware, hedging is a popular options strategy -- and why not? Options offer a reasonably priced, low-risk method of protecting against major losses on your equity investments. This article highlights four common ways you can use option contracts to hedge your market positions.

Protect Individual Stock Investments

First off, we have the protective put, which is also referred to as a "married put." As you may already be aware, buying (to open) a put option gives you the right, but not the obligation, to sell 100 shares of the underlying stock at the strike price of the contract. This bearish strategy is described as a "long put."

So, let's say that you own 1,000 shares of Stock XYZ. It's a relatively solid stock that you've held in your portfolio for a while, yielding a considerable gain of 155%. Ideally, you'd like to keep your shares, since you're collecting a respectable dividend and you are encouraged by the company's long-term prospects.

However, there's a recent fundamental development that has made you a bit nervous. XYZ's CEO of 25 years has departed the company, and you're anxious the shift to a new chief executive could have a negative impact on the stock price.

In this scenario, there's no need to panic-sell the shares -- nor do you need to sit by helplessly and watch your profits erode. Instead, you can ease your anxieties by buying a protective put. To implement the strategy, simply buy (to open) one put option for every 100 shares you'd like to insure (in this case, you would need 10 puts to protect all 1,000 shares).

There are no strict rules, but try to match the strike price of your puts with your preferred exit price on the stock. If XYZ is hovering at $58 per share, and you don't want to own the shares below $50, considering buying the 50-strike puts. Meanwhile, choose a time frame that aligns with your expected period of weak (or uncertain) price action. In this example, you'll probably have a good idea after three months or so whether you should head for the exits, or hold onto the stock.

If your fears come to fruition and the stock declines, your put options will go in the money. You can then exercise your option to sell the shares at the strike price, thereby securing a comfortable exit price. In other words, the purchase of the put options has capped your downside risk.

However, even if the puts expire worthless, there's an upside: you still own a stock on which you're bullish long-term. Plus, the protective puts have given you peace of mind, which could help you rest a little easier at night.

Guard Against Sector-Specific Weakness

As the popularity of exchange-traded funds (ETF) continues to grow, there is an array of hedging opportunities. There are now ETFs available on nearly every sector of the market, which is great news for speculators.

Let's take a look at this example. If you own a variety of large-cap tech stocks, it would be pretty tedious to buy a protective put on each individual security (not to mention it would cost you a bundle in brokerage fees). However, that doesn't change the fact that you're concerned about the potentially negative effects of a slowdown in corporate IT spending.

If you expect this fundamental development to have an ill effect on some of your tech holdings, but you'd prefer to keep the shares over the long term, simply find an ETF that's based on the sector in question. In this example, it would be the PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 ETF (NASDAQ:QQQ), which tracks powerhouse stocks such as Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC). To hedge your large-cap tech investments, purchase one put option per 1,000 shares you'd like to insure.

The possible outcomes here are roughly the same as with a straightforward protective put. However, bear in mind that ETFs won't necessarily track the movements of your stocks directly, due to their unique compositions. For example, AAPL controls a much larger percentage of the QQQ compared with INTC. So, you could theoretically lose money on your Intel shares, while the QQQ remains perched above the strike price of your puts, due to a simultaneous surge in AAPL shares.

Happily, though, a large number of sectors have more than one dedicated ETF, so you should be able to pick and choose. Be sure to do some research before you purchase put protection, as it definitely pays to keep an eye on the weighting assigned to each asset within the ETF.

Last but not least, it bears mentioning that you will most likely not be exercising your option, as you would with a protective put -- unless you happen to have a couple hundred shares of the appropriate ETF ready to sell. Rather, if your option goes in the money, you can simply sell to close prior to expiration in order to lock in a gain.

No positions in stocks mentioned.

Global markets resilient in face of US superstorm

The floor of the New York Stock Exchange is empty of traders, Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, in New York. All major U.S. stock and options exchanges will remain closed Monday with Hurricane Sandy nearing landfall on the East Coast. Trading has rarely stopped for weather. A blizzard led to a late start and an early close on Jan. 8, 1996, according to the exchange's parent company, NYSE Euronext. The NYSE shut down on Sept. 27, 1985 for Hurricane Gloria. Sand bags protect an entrance of the New York Stock Exchange, Monday, Oct. 29, 2012. Hurricane Sandy continued on its path Monday, forcing the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds and soaking rain. There had been plans to allow electronic trading to go forward on the New York Stock Exchange but with a storm surge expected to cover parts of lower Manhattan in water, officials decided late Sunday that it was too risky to ask any personnel to staff the exchanges. (AP) ? Markets recovered their poise Tuesday, though trading remained subdued as Wall Street remained closed for a second day because of the superstorm that's ravaging the East Coast of the U.S.

The New York Stock Exchange's decision to remain shut marks the first time weather has stopped trading for two straight days since 1888.

Though the impact on the U.S. economy could be hefty, the global financial markets that are open have largely remained calm. Monday's losses in Europe have been more than recovered on Tuesday.

"Markets have put in a robust performance with equity prices appearing to have held up despite the damage that has been inflicted on the North East coast by hurricane Sandy," said Fawad Razaqzada, market strategist at GFT Markets.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.7 percent at 5,835 while Germany's DAX rose 0.9 percent to 7,266. The CAC-40 in France was 0.8 percent higher at 3,436.

There have been strong performances by individual stocks in Europe, not least BP, which announced a big dividend increase and UBS, which revealed plans to lay off 10,000 staff.

Investors will continue to monitor the progress of the storm, which has already claimed the lives of at least 16 people, to assess the financial impact. So far, experts estimate the cost of the damage is around $20 billion, with around half of that insured.

Many investors are looking back into history for guidance. In 2005 for example, Hurricane Katrina, the most devastating hurricane in U.S. history, lowered the country's economic growth by around 1 percent before it bounced back on the back of reconstruction.

"Back then, the U.S. economy was in a stronger condition whereas now, economic growth is on a softer trajectory," said Neil MacKinnon, global macro strategist at VTB Capital.

The uncertainty generated by the storm comes at the start of a big week in the United States. This is the last full week before the Nov. 6 presidential election and culminates Friday with the release of October's employment report, which many analysts think could have an impact on the vote.

Beyond stocks, financial markets were relatively calm.

The euro recouped the previous day's losses to trade 0.4 percent higher at $1.2950 despite a survey from the European Commission showing that economic sentiment in the 17-country eurozone fell to a 38-month low in October. Figures showing Spain's economy shrank a further 0.3 percent in the third quarter meant the country has been in recession for five straight quarters.

Meanwhile, the price of benchmark New York oil was also 13 cents higher at $85.67 a barrel.

Earlier in Asia, trading was more mixed.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 1 percent to close at 8,841.98 after the Bank of Japan announced it was expanding a bond-buying program to help spur growth. Some analysts said they were disappointed by the small size of the program.

The announcement followed a report showing Japan's industrial output contracted by 4.1 percent in September from August and 8.1 percent from a year earlier.

Japan's economy has been hobbled by weakness in its turbocharged export sector, which has been hit hard by a slowdown in demand from recession-mired Europe and a persistently strong yen, which makes Japanese products more expensive for overseas buyers.

Elsewhere, South Korea's Kospi index rose 0.4 percent to 1,899.58 but Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.4 percent to 21,428.58. Benchmarks in mainland China, also rose.

In Asia, traders are also waiting for China's once-in-a-decade National Party Congress on Nov. 8, which will usher in a new crop of party leaders.

In Vietnam, US relies on pirate site to network

(AP) ? It's a wildly popular website laden with unlicensed songs and Hollywood movies, a prime exhibit of the digital piracy that is strangling the music industry in Asia and eroding legitimate online sales around the world.

The free-to-download bonanza has pushed Vietnam's Zing.vn into the ranks of the globe's top 550 websites. But a few clicks inside the site reveal a surprising presence: the U.S. government, which maintains a bustling social media account there.

Washington is a vocal proponent of intellectual property rights in Vietnam as it is around the world, and a site like Zing would be shut down in the United States. But with space for public diplomacy limited in Communist Vietnam, the American embassy uses its "Zingme" account to reach out to young people in Vietnam as it seeks to build closer ties with its former enemy.

The embassy's presence shows just how mainstream pirate sites have become in Vietnam, where the government does nothing to stop them operating. But it also raises questions whether Washington is legitimizing a renowned pirate site that record labels, singers and industry groups say ignores requests that it take down infringing material.

Coca-Cola and Samsung pulled their advertising from the site earlier this month because of piracy concerns following questions by The Associated Press. The move challenged Zing's business model and was praised by recording industry groups. Samsung said last week it was also closing its Zingme account for the same reason.

The embassy said it recognizes the concerns for U.S. copyright interests posed by Zing but that it believes that contact with the website's users could reduce traffic or infringing activity on it. The mission sometimes uses its Zingme page to post about copyright infringement.

Its statement noted that the site had removed, at its request, the link to infringing material that appears on other Zingme pages as a matter of course. It also noted to its lack of options in a country where the Communist government controls the media, saying "there were few spaces for public discourse and intermittent access to Facebook", referring to a block the government sometimes puts on the American social networking site.

But not everyone thinks engaging with Zing is the right thing to do.

"Here we are as an American company trying to set things right with one of the biggest pirates in Vietnam but the U.S. embassy is essentially showing its support by being on its site," said Mimi Nguyen, an American who has been trying fruitlessly to get Zing to take down some 10,000 songs owned by her family's business for a year.

"It is really sad to find out the embassy is using their platform."

The Recording Industry Association of America, which praised the decision by Samsung and Coke to withdrawn from Zing and has labeled Zing a "notorious" pirate site, said it was neither endorsing nor criticizing the embassy's decision to maintain the site.

Neil Turkewitz, a senior vice president at the association, said he imagined the embassy had tried to balance the ability to target a tech-savvy demographic with anti-piracy messages against the appearance of a connection between it and the site.

"My guess is that it wasn't an easy decision," he said.

The recording industry around the world is struggling to make money from online distribution models, and illegal downloading remains rampant. Artists and producers in much of Asia are feeling the pinch especially hard because governments have failed to pass or enforce anti-piracy laws. Licensed CDs, films and downloads can cost the equivalent of a day's salary, making it even harder to wean people off pirated products.

In Vietnam, inaction by a government that sees no political upside in cracking down on what many see as a victimless crimes has pushed the industry to the point of collapse. Zing is seen as the No.1 enemy by those who speak out against its effective stranglehold over the country's music industry.

"Zing is destroying the industry and they know it," said record producer Quoc Trung, who is leading a campaign against online piracy. "We need people to pay for music, not just click on it. It is now or never."

Zing, which declined repeated requests for comment on this article and a previous one, has used free download to become the sixth-most visited site in Vietnam, and the second most popular Vietnamese music download site. Around 15 percent of its visitors are from overseas. It is not the only infringing website in Vietnam by far, but it is the most visited.

Sites that offer pirated content alongside other Internet services like Zing exist elsewhere around the world and are among the most reprehensible, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.

"They want to appear as legitimate actors, and have functions unrelated to piracy, yet operate network services that include features that intentionally and effectively induce infringement," it said in a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative in August asking the government to use all the tools at its disposal to ensure Zing and others are not permitted to undermine legitimate online markets.

"These services deliberately gain market share by providing access to infringing materials, launching music services without any form of licensing, and have demonstrated continued resolve to engage in conduct based upon misappropriation."

Zingme closely resembles Facebook, which recently overtook the Vietnamese site in subscriber numbers, according to one research group. Facebook is sometimes blocked by the government because of fears it could be used to mobilize dissent against its one-party rule. Zingme is never blocked, and is more popular with younger, less educated Vietnamese. Companies and institutions often have accounts on both. The embassy has more than 18,000 friends on Zingme, compared to 12,000 on Facebook.

Many in the industry have no choice but to work with Zing even as it distributes their music and films for free. Not having your music on the site means getting an audience for live concerts, or attracting commercial sponsorship, is almost impossible, industry executives said. But a few are pushing back, among them established singer Le Quyen, who is suing Zing and eight other infringing websites.

"I'm sure that Zing is aware that what they do is wrong, but they are afraid that other singers will put pressure on them if I win the case," she said before one of her near-weekly concerts at a venue owned by her husband here. "That's why they keep avoiding my demands. Their tactic is to drag the case on until their opponent gets tired and gives up."

Some in the industry predict Zing and other websites will embrace a more legitimate model, rather like Baidu in neighboring China, which after years of complaints from international and local record labels about pirated content signed a licensing deal with its former critics last year. Major Western record labels eager to sell music in the 13th most populous country in the world have been in early talks with Zing and other sites, but there is no deal on the horizon.

For now, the sites are not taking down their unlicensed content because doing so would mean that users would flock to that of a rival, and new ones are cropping all the time. Those offering unlimited downloads of Hollywood movies for a monthly subscription as low as $2 are amassing large audiences, and could be looking to leveraging their popularity to become legitimate providers.

"In Vietnam, you build an audience first, and then you negotiate," said Phung Tien Cong, a manager at MVCorp, which is trying to establish a pay-for-song business in collaboration with Zing, other websites and license holders.

Hurricane Sandy: what to do if you're on one of the 9,000 canceled flights

More flight cancellations are expected as airlines scrap flights on Tuesday and maybe Wednesday. Hurricane Sandy has also brought some Amtrak service and public transit to a halt.

Hurricane Sandy brought travel largely to a halt along America's East Coast Monday, grounding flights and affecting travelers across the country, as well as around the world.

As of 9 a.m., the website FlightAware tallied 8,962 flight cancellations as a result of the superstorm.

The shutdowns by airlines left venues like New York City's LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports as hubs of aviation inactivity, sidelined by Sandy's winds and rains.

The storm is affecting not just people hoping to leave the region, but those trying to get to cities spanning from Charlotte, N.C., to Bangor, Maine. Passengers booked on Alaska Airlines Flight 12 from Seattle to Boston were among the throngs across the United States whose travel was delayed.

In places as far away as Hong Kong, travelers booked hotels for extra nights because they can't head home.

The number of flight cancellations is expected to grow as airlines scrap more flights on Tuesday and perhaps Wednesday. That's because the storm appears poised to hover over the densely populated Northeast for some time.

American Airlines, for example, has already canceled Flight 344 from Chicago to LaGuardia for Tuesday night.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said its airports ? including JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark ? remain open, but noted there's not much reason to be there if you can avoid it.

"Air carriers have ceased operations until further notice, and we are encouraging travelers not to travel to the airports," the port authority said in a statement Monday.

Sandy's effect on travel goes beyond airlines. The storm prompted shutdowns of Amtrak rail service, as well as many bus and subway lines throughout the affected region, which is home to about one-fifth of the country's population. Public transportation came to a halt in New York City. The website of the Washington, D.C., Metro service showed a big red storm symbol with the announcement, "Metro announces full suspension of service for Monday." In Boston, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority operated for part of Monday before a 2 p.m. cease of operations.

Not every flight in the region was grounded. The FlightAware's early-morning summary held out the promise of "a few more" departures from some airports.

But with thousands of passengers needing to rebook, and in an era when airlines typically operate close to full capacity on their planes, the fallout from the storm could last well into next week, even as the storm is predicted to move off to the north.

Airlines are offering fee-free changes to itineraries, and refunds in some cases, says FlightAware, a provider of air-travel information. It notes that the best way to make flight changes is on airline websites, since "call centers are typically overwhelmed during major events."

Posting a Twitter update about your rebooking needs, with a mention of the airline you're using, sometimes prompts a quicker response from customer service than calling by phone. If you try it, just don't count on it as a guaranteed route forward.

An Associated Press news report says fliers should "keep in mind that airlines usually only waive this [itinerary-change] fee once." It adds, "Be certain you want to change your itinerary before you lock it in." Otherwise, it could cost as much as $150 to make a second change.

Travelers who cancel a booking may be offered a voucher for a future flight, but "can ask for cash instead," the AP report says.

Often airlines do not cover the cost of hotel stays for cases of weather-related delay. The United Airlines cancellation policy states that when delays are "not within United's control," the airline may offer food and beverages, or meal vouchers, and "we may be able to give you a distressed passenger rate voucher for a nearby hotel."

Although the storm is huge in size and is having major effects on air travel this week, forecasters aren't expecting it to do record amounts of wind and flood damage.

The risk-modeling firm EQECAT predicts the storm's economic damages will be similar to hurricane Irene in 2011 at $10 billion or hurricane Ike in 2008 at $20 billion. That's a far cry from hurricane Katrina in 2005, which did economic damage in the neighborhood of $100 billion.

Charlie Sheen Returns to TV in FX's 'Anger Management' | Self ...

Afton Water (Robert Burns)

Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, I'll sing thee a song in thy praise;
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.
Thou stock-dove, whose echo resounds thro' the glen,
Ye wild whistling blackbirds in yon thorny den,
Thou green-crested lapwing, thy screaming forbear,
I charge you disturb not my slumbering fair.
How lofty, sweet Afton, thy neighbouring hills,
Far mark'd with the courses of clear winding rills;
There daily I wander as noon rises high,
My flocks and my Mary's sweet cot in my eye.
How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below,
Where wild in the woodlands the primroses blow;
There oft, as mild Ev'ning sweeps over the lea,
The sweet-scented birk shades my Mary and me.
Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides,
And winds by the cot where my Mary resides,
How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave,
As gathering sweet flowrets she stems thy clear wave.
Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, sweet river, the theme of my lays;
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

matykhanom: Cell Phone Covers | Nemanja Krecelj Social Media

Cell phones have changed the way people communicate with each other. Most people now rely on these gadgets as their main communication system. Even with simple things like setting a date or appointment, it has also altered the way people do these things. Nowadays, people do not set a specific place where they would meet up anymore. Instead, they would just say, ?Hey, see you in the shopping mall!? And it would be understood that once you get to the mall, you would ring or text the person you?re meeting and tell him/her your exact location so you can see each other.

As much as cell phones have proliferated around the market, so have mobile phone accessories. Accessories for cell phones come in two kinds. The first type is the practical function type of accessory like chargers, batteries, Bluetooth devices, headsets, holsters, belt clips, a cell phone case or cover, and so on. The other type is for fashion purposes. This includes ribbon or jewelry lanyards, bling kit, charms, and so on. When buying mobile phone accessories, it is very important that you are able to strike a balance between form and practicality so that you will invest your money into good use. Here are some ways to do that.

Add zest to practical devices
If you?re buying batteries and chargers because you need them to make cell phone usage more convenient for you, that?s a very good idea. But if you want to spice things a little, you can add glamor and style to these accessories by decorating them. For example, you can wholesale cell phone accessories put bling stick-ons on the surface of your portable charger. This would not only make it look more stylish but also make it easier for you to recognize your portable charger.

Surface interest, Win 8 caution on release day

1 day

U.S. shoppers woke up with mild Surface fever on Friday, lining up in moderate numbers to buy Microsoft's groundbreaking tablet computer designed to challenge Apple's iPad.

The global debut of the Windows 8 operating system was greeted with pockets of enthusiasm, but not the mania reserved for some previous Apple launches.

Microsoft is positioning the slick new computing device, which runs a limited version of Windows and Office with a thin, click-on keyboard cover, as a perfect combination of PC and tablet that is good for work as well as entertainment.

"I like the flexibility of having the keyboard and the touch capability," said Mike Gipe, 50, who works in sales for bank Barclays, and was planning to buy a Surface tablet at Microsoft's pop-up store in Times Square in New York.

"It's the combination of having the consumer stuff and the work stuff," he said, looking forward to using Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations on the new device.

The Times Square store was the first to sell the Surface???Microsoft's first ever own-brand computer???and other Windows 8 devices late on Thursday and will be open through the holiday shopping season. On Friday morning it was crowded with a mix of tourists and local office workers, but the cash tills were not jammed.

"With the other tablets you're a consumer. With this you can have input," said Peter Townsend, on vacation in New York from Australia with his wife, who bought a Surface tablet because he liked the keyboard.

Mark Pauluch, 28, who works for a New York private equity firm, said he would like a Surface because he does not want to take a laptop on a plane, but was disappointed when the sales representative told him the wifi-only Surface would not work with Cisco VPN networking.

"I can't use this to replace my work laptop unless it supports VPN," he said.

Elsewhere in the United States, there was solid but not overwhelming interest for the Surface.

"It's a good tablet. I am not a huge i-anything fan, I like Windows," said Matt Shanahan, a software developer who drove four hours to the tiny Michigan Avenue pop-up store in Chicago from Grand Rapids, Michigan to buy a Surface. "My friend and I are software developers and this gives us an opportunity to develop new apps," he said.

In a pop-up store at the San Francisco Centre mall about 50 people lined up to buy the new Surface.

"On an iPad you have to use half the screen for a keyboard, or buy an accessory. I love that the Surface is so integrated, that you can type and use Word and all my other programs," said Malte von Sehested, a textbook creator who bought a Surface.

"With the Surface you get a steeper learning curve???I had to get someone to show me how to side-swipe, swipe out to get the menus for instance," he said. "It may take a week, before it all becomes natural. That could be a problem for Microsoft. My old dad, he would get hit by that steeper learning curve."

Wall Street and tech industry experts failed to show great enthusiasm for Windows 8, but were prepared to give Microsoft time to succeed.

"Microsoft did not come out with Windows 8 thinking it will be an overnight success," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets. "But there's hope that this could be the silver bullet of growth (for Microsoft) as well as giving the PC industry some optimism that there's better days ahead."

The next six to 12 months is a "crucial period" for Microsoft to get traction with consumers, added Ives.

Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst at tech research firm Forrester, said consumers may be best served waiting for tablets running the full Windows 8 Pro and Intel chips, which are due out early next year.

"Windows 8 has a lot of great features, but RT has a long way to go," she said, citing a lack of apps and poor video performance on the Surface.

"It's not really a PC. RT is too restricted. Some people will be happier with the full Windows 8," she said.

Wildlife Wellness: Harmony between Species | Partners in Wellness

?Globally Organized Crime Syndicates are penetrating secure wildlife populations.? ?An immense, increasingly sophisticated illegal trade in wildlife parts conducted by organized crime [is] decimating the world?s most beloved species?on a scale never before seen.? ~ Wildlife Conservation Society, USA

Creative Commons License photo credit: Schimalto

The practitioners of this multi-billion dollar illegal wildlife trade are violent enemies of conservation. The internet is the growing medium for the sale of illegal wildlife parts. (Lingo: ?wildlife parts? is kinda gruesome to me.) The wanton abuse, disregard and disrespect for ?any? life (wild or otherwise) fueled by love of money (or some other stinky diesel) is sad, appalling, sickening to me! (Yeah, that was partly an ?emotional? condemnatory statement. Let me follow it by a ?logical? acknowledgement that all of us have ?learned? a specific set of survival skills. Some a positive, civilized set and others a negative, barbaric set and/or everything in between the extreme set.) What is your survival skill set?

All of us, starting at a young age, have had a differing survival/values education of one kind or another. Each of us, depending on where (i.e. city mouse or country mouse) and when (decade/generation influences) we were born and to whom (our parents and their culture/education, etc.)?as well as other factors?provided the extensive variables that shaped and make up our personal/present value system/education. Hopefully, you were born to parents that highly valued you and loved/cherished you! Not everyone has had that privilege. Some have experienced betrayal at a very tender age.

For example, the despair learned by a young girl (i read about) named Sharada who was taken from her Asian village to a foreign city. Guess who sold her at age 9? Shockingly, Sharada?s father and for a measly $14 (U.S.). My heart breaks for Sharada and others like her who have been sold/forced into slavery. I wonder about Sharada?s father?like why he sold his daughter? Was he too sold at a young age and by whom?his father?!

Some of us have learned to care. Some not to care. Some have learned to give. Others have learned to take. Some have learned to love. Others have learned to hate. Some have learned to conserve. Others have learned to consume. Some have learned what it?s like to be free. Others have learned slavery. Some have learned harmony. Others disunity. Some have learned peace. Others war.

Creative Commons License photo credit 2: faeparsons Creative Commons License photo credit 3: byronv2

What have you learned? What will you teach? What are you teaching by your ?living? example?

Sadly, some have learned to survive the wild (and/or urban jungle) by slaughter and/or illegal sale. We all need survival skills, but in so-called ?civilized? or highly educated societies does one resort to doing whatever it takes including any type of illegal activity?! (i.e. kill or be killed?/sell or be sold?!)

Shouldn?t we value life?! It?s precious. FYI: I?m HAPPY to be alive!:) GLAD you?re alive too!:)?together we can help preserve life in and out of the jungle. Thank You for living in a manner that manifests a high regard for life!:)

Some tortoises live for 150 years! Some trees for 3,000! How long will you live?! How long will I live?!

By contrast, our lives are way more meaningful than a tortoise or tree. We have the capacity to enjoy reading, writing, learning, music,? sports, etc. We have a capacity for spirituality. (Figuratively, if I?m a tree, I don?t want to be cut down?my life cut short by my ax (choices) or somebody?s ax..sounds like ?acts? or actions of others that could shorten my life.)

Let?s not cut short life! (We know the devastating damage of deforestation.) Do you want your life cut short?! No Way?You say!:)

Caring, giving, loving, conservation, moderation is a life-style of daily choices leading to wellness and longevity! Appreciating, caring and respecting life (in general) is a factor to Wildlife Wellness and harmony between species!

As we grow, learn, progress as individuals, partners, caregivers, etc?.our on-going, progressive education of harmonious survival and high value for life ?literacy? requires an on-going vocabulary lesson and change of culture, choices, etc. Are you learning harmonious survival skills? We do so by putting non-offensive, positive, life-promoting (agape love) vocabulary/behavior into daily practice. We become fluent with practice. Harmony literacy is living and developing?

I?m a learner?everyday so much to learn, so little time. Thank you for listening/reading my blog/ramblings/rumblings, etc. :)? If I want to progress in learning/living in harmony and peace in the hopes of prolonging my life and the lives of others?I need humility. Am I humble enough to change?! It is possible to change/learn non-offensive, harmonious, peaceful communication and interaction between species!

Can you imagine a future where all life on the planet is at peace and living in complete harmony?! For that to happen?realistically, everyone has to make changes. What changes do you need to make? Do you value life, love, peace, harmony enough to make any?

Millions believe in ?the law of Karma??Hindu sages devised the law of Karma as they groped to explain human suffering. I was reading this interesting perspective from a Buddhist woman who said: ?I thought it did not make sense to have to suffer for something I was born with but about which I knew nothing. I had to accept it as my destiny.?? She found karma (?the influence of an individual?s past actions on his future lives, or reincarnations?) explanation for suffering unsatisfactory. I find it interesting the link between the idea of rebirth and the teaching that can found throughout Christendom and elsewhere?the teaching that humans have an immortal soul that survives the body. This ?soul? is said to be involved in suffering?either in a present life or in an afterlife. (Such ?ideas? are widespread so, I?m curious how these ideas affect the realm of care giving for the sufferer and partnerships in general)?

However, what ?proof? is there that these ideas are valid?! (I respect others? beliefs/ideas! Personally, any faith/belief? I may have is built/constructed/assembled on fact and proof?.not emotions, fantasy, graphic novels or fiction (science or otherwise). (Those things serve as an ?escape? from pain. The cause of my pain may still remain.)

It takes a lot of time, effort, research and work to build belief. When you think carefully and investigate the ?facts? surrounding ?any? idea/teaching/tradition to see if it?s true/valid?instead of about your feelings or the emotional response produced by an idea/fantasy/teaching/tradition, etc?your vision (your choices based on beliefs) are not hazy/clouded or swayed by unstable emotions and/or sentiment. You clearly see what makes sense and is reasonable/logical/healing (has the ring of truth) and what is a bunch of bologne -lol:) What are you building? Is your belief system a house of bricks/truth or a house of twigs/lies?! When the big bad wolf comes huffing and puffing?will he blow your house down?!

Here?s something to contemplate:

People who on average spend 6 hours each day watching TV can expect to live 4.8 years less than those who watch no TV. Put another way, every hour of TV reduces a sedentary adult?s life expectancy by about 22 minutes.? ~British Journal of Sports Medicine, Britain

According to BBC News, Britain:

Nearly half of cancers diagnosed in the [United Kingdom] each year-over 130,000 in total-are caused by avoidable life choices including smoking, drinking and eating the wrong things.

This is a tough rhetorical question(s)?you?re man or woman enough to honestly answer, right?:) Are you suffering or causing others to suffer because of avoidable life choices?!

Wildlife wellness : harmony between species?destiny or life choices?! YOU decide!:)

We all need comfort?every species?I ?found? this interesting verse of a Psalm (song) (which according to scholars is hope of future intervention by the Biblical Creator)?

?You are opening your hand and satisfying every living thing.?

Proven Ways To Increace Business With Mobile Marketing | Eric - First

What do you know about mobile marketing? Have you set up a marketing plan? If you have a plan in place already, are you looking to improve it? Is your current strategy working effectively for your business, or is it hindering progress? Are you using your mobile marketing plan to your advantage? If reading these questions make you question yourself, you definitely need to read further.

You always have the option of sharing apps with your customers, but were you aware that you can create the majority of these applications yourself? Improve your marketing strategy by offering a special app for your customers only. You are merely limited by imagination, as there are a lot of items you can include in your app.

Always strive to create advertisements that have the potential to go viral, thereby maximizing their effectiveness. They will probably tell a friend or two, which will greatly increase the effect of your mobile marketing campaign.

TIP! Run a usability test before you go live with your campaign. You have to make sure that your customers will be able to view the content that you are sending them.

Your home base is the main element of your campaign. If you have a mobile presence, it should be a way to stay in contact with current home based clients. A mobile platform should just be one part of your entire business.

Utilize an A/B testing process on the homepage of your mobile site. This can help you understand what your visitors may be having trouble using or understanding. Create two different landing pages (A&B) to see which is more effective for conversions. Use the more successful page.

Market your events through several channels to increase attendance. For example, use a direct mail campaign to inform customers of an upcoming sale. You can email your customers beforehand, then an hour before the event send them a reminder by text.

TIP! Make your mobile marketing advertisements easy to share, and they will be shared. Anytime you build a mobile promotion, ensure that they are easy to pass on to others for further advertising.

If your site is mobile friendly, make sure it includes a great map to your location. It has become a standard trend for individuals to use their cell phone to find directions to where they are going. Try to make it as easy as possible for your customers to find you. Make sure your maps look good on mobile devices and show up well when you do a mobile search. Create a link to take users directly to Google Maps to get directions.

TIP! You should get as much data as you can about your target audience with mobile marketing. This is how you can help to cater your message to your target?s tastes.

When creating a mobile marketing campaign you must focus on keeping your existing customers as opposed to gaining new clients. The relationships you have already built will likely be more receptive to your mobile marketing updates than new customers. Mobile marketing used for new consumers is often regarded as spam.

Start by building a good database. Use ethical techniques when adding numbers to your database. You really need to get their permission before starting. This can be done either with a Web form or having the person text you with a given short code you gave them.

TIP! Wait until the results are in on your first mobile marketing campaign before you cook up a second one. In this case, you should measure your campaign?s success by its longevity and not the number of sales it produces.

Location is the key to effective mobile marketing. Your customers will have their mobiles with them at all times and know where you are thanks to this type of marketing. With mobile marketing, no customer is out of your reach. Figure out how to exploit this location-targeting strategy for your company.

To get the results you are looking for, you will need to give your customers an incentive. Offer users incentives that will rationalize your mobile marketing efforts. Incentives do not necessarily have to be a cash reward, they can be things such as local weather alerts or event information. Coupons are a great way to encourage participation and improve the number of people who sign up for your campaign.

TIP! Mobile friendly maps are a wonderful way to help ensure you are doing what you can to attract the local customers. Easy accessibility can be the extra push that makes a customer in the vicinity choose your business over competitors.

A mobile call for action must be capitalized through promotion. Facebook, Twitter and your own website are popular choices for mobile marketing, but don?t forget to do promotions in your physical store location, if there is one, This will give your campaign maximum exposure, and allow your fans plenty of opportunities to sign up for your offers.

It?s important to take into account that mobile device users who are viewing your website are not going to be able navigate as easily as computer users. Keep your mobile campaign uncomplicated. This might make it appear simple if you?re using a computer, but the format will be ideal for mobile devices.

If you use voice calls as part of your strategy, you should remember to respect the human element and use a personable, friendly approach. Take this into account.
