Joe Joe Bear Foundation ? Our Cypress Non ... - Cypress TX Homes

Please give me a bit of background about Joe Joe Bear.

The Joe Joe Bear Foundation was created in memory of Joseph David Ordaz who passed away on March 10, 2009 from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, he was 24.? Joe had a bone marrow transplant on July 17, 2008 that the doctors thought would be successful.? However on December 3, 2008 he found out the cancer was back.? Joe was undergoing treatment to prepare for a second transplant when he asked for a teddy bear to hold while he was alone so that he could feel like we were with him always.? Joe was so full of life and had a smile that would light up a room whenever he entered.? He was always in good spirits and always tried to make people smile, he is deeply missed.

The charity was created to keep Joe?s memory alive and to help others in the same situation.? It saddened him to hear the children crying at night in the hospital when they were alone and scared, he would say, ?he wished he could help comfort the sick children.????The Joe Joe Bear Foundation was founded in 2009 and is a 501c3 non-profit that give children with life threatening illnesses teddy bears to give them comfort when they are scared and alone.

In the past 3 years over 10,000 bears have been given to sick children in the hospital in the Houston and surrounding areas.? Hospitals receiving bears:

  • MD Anderson Cancer Center
  • Texas Children?s Hospital
  • Memorial Children?s Hospital
  • Harris County Hospital District
  • Health Bridge
  • Ronald McDonald House Houston
  • Ronald McDonald House Galveston
  • Shriver?s Burn Hospital Galveston

In addition to the bears we also hold bi-monthly community blood drives to create awareness of the need of blood to save lives of sick children.

What one thing do we need to know about your mission?

Tough question, The importance of a bear to a child, and the comfort it brings.? Many of our children will not see a cure in their lifetime, so we focus on their comfort now.? Putting a little smile on their face.

What is it like to be a volunteer for Joe Joe Bear?

Well we like to have fun!? We are laid back, easy going but hard working! ?We can find a place to fit the skills of our volunteer.

What are the requirements to volunteer?

To have a passion for the cause!? Every Volunteer has to hug a bear so they know what it feels like for a child receiving the bear. ?They all smile afterwards and say it makes them happy.

Other than volunteering, how else can residents of Cypress help?

By donating NEW bears, making a monetary donation, helping us create awareness, letting us speak at events.

Thank you so much to?Jeanette for taking time to share information with us about?Joe Joe Bear Foundation.??If you know of a non-profit in Cypress, TX that you would like to see highlighted, please send us the info through our?contact page.
